Stone Relief Carving Course at Glasgow City Heritage Trust

This One Day Stone Relief Carving Course with Simon Burns-Cox will be held at Glasgow City Heritage Trust at 54 Bell Street, Glasgow on Saturday 7th March 2020 from 10.00 to 16.00. The course is designed for those who would like to discover the art of stone carving and is suitable for all levels with a maximum of six participants in the class. The course price is £90 per head which includes the use of stone and tools plus lunch. Participants are advised to wear closed-toed shoes and safgtey equipment will be provided.

The course is designed as an introduction to Stone Relief Carving using Portland Stone with the aim of completing a simple project. You will first learn about the stone carving tools e.g the hammer, the claw and the chisel. You will also learn about the important techniques such as chopping, chasing and levelling. You will then think about a design, and learn how to draw and trace it out onto stone. The idea is to create a low to medium cut relief but those with more experience can attempt a more complicated design.Simon Burns-Cox is a professional Sculptor and Letter Carver based at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.
