Individual tuition in Sculpture, Stone Letter Carving and Stone Relief Carving

Individual tuition is available for Sculpture, Stone Letter Carving and Stone Relief Carving at flexible times throughout the year. Individual tuition is £125 per day with the stone and the use of tools included.

You will learn to think three dimensionally and how to manipulate the stone from the basic idea to the finished work. If you are letter carving, you will learn the importance of drawing your design onto the stone before carving thinking about style, proportion, spacing and form before the process of carving begins.

Two Day Stone Letter Carving and Relief Course for Small Group Tuition

There is also a Two Day Stone Letter Carving or Relief Course. The price is £165 per person with the use of stone and tools included and the course is suitable for beginners and more advanced students.

Before the course begins, you will be asked to look at different types of lettering and design styles and to think about what you would like to produce and carve during the course. At the beginning of the session, there will be a review about the tools and how to use them correctly. The student will be shown the about the importance of the V cut and different ways to cut stone. There will also be a discussion about style, proportion, spacing and form and the importance of drawing before preparation. We will look at how to transfer your design from your sketches on paper to the stone. Students will then begin to draw their design in preparation for carving. Students will work on their project with personalised tuition and guidance from Simon throughout the day. Please wear suitable clothing and safety glasses will be provided.

Summer Stone Carving Courses with Simon Burns-Cox at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop are held throughout the summer and include the following courses:

THE FIVE WEEK STONE LETTER CARVING AND RELIEF COURSE

This course is taught by Simon Burns-Cox at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop on Monday morning from 10.00 to 13.00 from the 13th May to 10th June 2019. Course price £170 with the use of stone and tools included. Maximum five participants and open to all levels. The course will introduced you to The Art of Stone Carving, Letter Carving and Relief and is open to all levels from beginner to those with more experience. Suitable for ages 12+ under full supervision.  Safety equipment will be provided and please wear suitable clothing. Gift vouchers are available and the courses are suitable for all types of events.

TWO DAY INTRODUCTORY STONE LETTER CARVING COURSE

The next Two Day Introductory Stone Letter Carving Course with Simon Burns-Cox will be held on the 8th and 15th June 2019 from 10.00 to 16.30. Course price £165 with the use of stone and tools included.  It is designed for people who have little or no experience in Stone Letter Carving. There is a maximum of five participants and the courses are suitable for ages 12+ under full supervision.  Before the course begins, you will be asked to look at calligraphy, lettering and design styles so you get a feel for Lettering before you begin. You will also be asked to think about what you would like to produce and carve during the course as this will save time.

 

Day One from 10.00 to 13.00 Students will learn about the tools and how to use them correctly before they begin. There will be a discussion about how  to cut straight, curved, diagonally and in depth creating the all important clean V cut channel.

From 13.30 to  16.30 The afternoon will be spent practising what has been learnt during the morning and then the students will begin to cut their first number or letter with personalised tuition and guidance from Simon. We will also look at proportion and spacing.  Homework: Students will be required to research designs for their first project.

Day Two from 10.00 to 16.30 There will be a discussion about the importance of drawing for preparation before carving. We will look at how to transfer your design from your sketches on paper to the stone and there will be a discussion about style and form. Students will then begin to draw, design and carve their first project.

PRIVATE AND INDIVIDUAL TUITION IN SCULPTURE, STONE CARVING, LETTER CARVING AND RELIEF WITH SIMON BURNS-COX

Simon Burns-Cox offers Private Tuition for individuals and groups in Sculpture, Stone Carving, Stone Letter Carving, and Relief at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. Tuition is arranged at a mutually convenient time throughout the year. You will learn to think three dimensionally and how to manipulate the Stone from the basic idea to the finished work. If you are Letter Carving, you will learn the importance of drawing your design onto the stone before carving thinking about style, proportion, spacing and form before the process of carving begins. The course prices are  £100 per day (10.00 to 16.30) per person or £200 for two days (10.00 to 16.30) per person or £220 for five mornings (10.00 to 13.00) per person which includes the use of stone and tools and Gift vouchers are available and valid for 12 months.
