Medium: Dark Slate

Dimensions: 90 x 30 x 2 cm

Date: 2017 Designed for The Scottish Sculpture Park Exhibition at Caol Ruadh, Arygll, Scotland

This sculpture is made from highly polished dark slate. On one side it reads ‘ Sic Itur Ad Astra ‘ meaning ‘ Thus One Journeys to The Stars ‘ inspired by Virgil from The Aeneid (Book IX Line 641). The words are spoken by Apollo to Aeneas’ young son Lulus. The quotation means a desire to pursue to the highest or reach the stars finding a way to immortality. Simon wanted to create a piece of work where the public could feel the beauty of the garden and take in their magnificent surroundings.  They are invited to look through the window which has been cut through the sculpture. Simon wants his audience to think about the life beyond and what can be achieved with hopes and dreams.

The Scottish Sculpture Park at Caol Ruadh is set in a spectacular 20 acre garden opposite the Burnt Islands on the Kyles of Bute, Argyll, Scotland. The Caol Ruadh Sculpture Park exhibits and  sees contemporary outdoor sculpture created by artists from around the world. Throughout the summer, visitors can wander freely around the garden, among classical and abstract sculpture created in stone, wood, metal and organic materials by internationally renowned sculptors. The beauty of the garden and its ancient rocks, the dramatic views and soft sea light offer a setting unlike any other in Britain for outdoor sculpture. The Scottish Sculpture Park at Caol Ruadh is run by Karen Scotland and Anne Edmonds. This year’s exhibition entitled ‘Hortus Redux’ will open from Sunday 4th June until 1st October 2017 . It is open from 11.00am to 6pm from Thursday to Sunday and Bank holidays and on Wednesday by private appointment. Admission: Adults £5.00 and Children under 16 are free.
