Why not try a new skill in an ancient art ?

If you are free on a Wednesday morning in November and December 2018, Simon Burns-Cox is running another five week course in Stone Carving, Letter Carving and Relief Carving in the purpose built studios of The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop which is an international centre for Sculptors.

The next Five Week Course in Stone Carving, Letter Carving and Relief with Simon Burns-Cox is on Wednesday morning from 10.00 to 13.00 from the 14th, 21st and 28th November and the 5th and 12th December 2018. Maximum five participants and open to all levels. The course price is £160 with the use of stone and tools included.

There is free parking at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and also Cafe MILK which is onsite at the studios where you can purchase a wide range of drinks and food.

The course will introduced you to the art of Stone Carving, Letter Carving and Bas Relief Carving and is open to all levels from beginner to those with more experience. Before the course begins, you will be asked to look at calligraphy, lettering and design styles so you get a feel for Lettering before you begin. You will also be asked to think about what you would like to produce and carve during the course as this will save time.

Students will learn about the tools and how to use them correctly before they begin. There will be a discussion about how  to cut straight, curved, diagonally and in depth creating the all important clean V cut channel.

Time will then be spent practising what has been learnt and then the students will begin to cut their first number or letter with personalised tuition and guidance from Simon. We will also look at proportion and spacing.

There will be a discussion about the importance of drawing for preparation before carving. We will look at how to transfer your design from your sketches on paper to the stone and there will be a discussion about style and form. Students will then begin to draw, design and carve their first project.

If you are unable to attend the course, Simon Burns-Cox offers a range of courses throughout the year. The new course dates for 2019 will be available shortly. Simon also offer individual tuition at flexible times.
