DESIGN YOUR OWN GRAVESTONE

DESIGN YOUR OWN GRAVESTONE

When it comes to choosing a Gravestone for a loved one, there is an large range to choose from but most are manufactured for the mass market and lack design and personality. So why not choose a bespoke handcarved Gravestone with a unique design and epitaph to commemorate the departed ?

SIMON BURNS-COX, SCULPTOR AND LETTER CARVER

Simon Burns-Cox is a Sculptor and Letter Carver based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He makes a wide range of handcarved Headstones, Gravestones and Memorials in Stone and Marble. Each one is individually created and carefully carved by hand. Simon will be happy to help you make decisions at this difficult time and guide you through the process of creating a beautiful memorial.

Today, many people often choose the nasty black, shiny, granite gravestone with gold lettering available from the funeral undertakers. Many of these businesses offer commercial gravestones to the general public because they are cheap. This is also a large part of their business. However, you don’t need to go down this route. Why not choose a traditional handcarved Headstone, Gravestone or Memorial which is bespoke and uniquely carved for the client ?

BESPOKE HANDCARVED HEADSTONES, GRAVESTONES AND MEMORIALS

It is a good idea to wait for at least six months to a year before choosing a special design to commerate the departed. Death is a stressful business and you don’t want to have to think about this too soon. Wait and think clearly about what design would be suitable and what epitaph and unique words you would like on the Gravestone to remember the person you love. When commissioning a Gravestone, Simon will take time to talk with the client about the deceased and what would be a suitable memorial for them. You will need to think about the following:

  • The ideas for the design
  • A suitable hand carved inscription and the fonts for the design
  • The choice of materials to be used, and the maintenance of the material chosen
  • The size of the work and its overall finish
  • The churchyard and cemetery regulations which can differ depending on location
  • Installation if required by a local stonemason
  • The timescale and the costs including installation
  • Delivery costs

Costs vary according to the type of stone used, the number of letters carved, the overall design and installation and delivery requirements. For a simple Gravestone with a brief description, the cost will start from about £1000 upwards depending on the requirements.
