When choosing a headstone, you will need to think about what type of stone should be used so the following things should be considered:
All the headstones, gravestones, and memorials that I make are unique bespoke and handcarved individual pieces of work. When a client asks me how much it will cost, this will depend on the following factors: On average a small single plaque or headstone will start from about £1250 upwards depending on requirements. Installation and cemetery costs are at an additional cost. Consultations and designs can be done online.
The hammer, chisel, mallet and axe are used for hitting stone, and known as percussion tools. They were the earliest stone carving implements used in many countries around the world and they are still used today.

I have been asked this week to take over The Visual Arts Scotland Instagram page to give an insight into my work as a Sculptor and Letter Carver. One of the themes I was asked to explore was who are my artistic influences ? If I was asked to name artists or creatives who have influenced my work or whose work excites or inspires me in someway, I would have to say Alberto Giacometti, Eric Gill and Ian Hamilton Finlay. I also admire the work of the famous Barbara Hepworth, and the contemporary sculptors, Emily Young, and Mel Fraser.

When people ask me to recommend what type of marble they should use for carving, I usually suggest using the ‘old’ type of Italian Carrara marble as its much easier to carve. This type of marble has been used for centuries by all the great sculptors of the world who often went to the mines in Carrara to select their stone and they still do today.
I have just finished a gravestone plaque in The Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh where I was required to use high raised stone letter carving. I was asked to add additional names and dates to an old limestone plaque dating from 1925 when this type of letter carving was more common.
